mic conways national junk band

Judy Backhouse - “Ukulele Lola”

Vocals, ukulele, piano accordion, piano.

I was born at a very early age, in Budapest. I was very attached to my mother at the time.

Having a nightclub piano player mother and a ukulele playing father meant live music at home every night, as well as harmonising to all the great standards such as 'Indian Love Call' with my father. Despite living behind the Iron Curtain in the grim claw of socialism, I knew all the words to 'It Had To Be You'.

I had been singing in acappella choirs and quartets for years, as well as performing in my quirky ukulele duo 'The Tea Ladies', when I first saw Mic Conway's National Junk Band by chance, at an outdoor gig in Darling Harbour, on my birthday. I simply could not believe my eyes. I knew immediately that I belonged in the band.

That night I telephoned Mic and asked to join the band. He thanked me very politely for my interest, but advised me that there was neither the room nor the money for an extra person. The rest is history.
